The brooks, canals and ditches had had to make way for modern docks, locks, channels and the Scheldt. Because of its location, mostly dockers, boatmen and workmen lived here. The neighbourhood did not have too good a reputation. After World War II, the port expanded more and more to the north. This area was polished and became one of the city’s hippest neighbourhoods with lots of light and space. The MAS with its stunning views over the city and the Red Star Line Museum add to the neighbourhood’s cachet.<\/p>\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-780x586.jpg 780w, https:\/\/erasmusfugger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230113_145121-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n
We go on a tour with a guide from the Eugeen Van Mieghem Foundation, who tells us about the growth of the old port between 1803 and 1930.
